Litchfield-Diane Knox, lovingly known as “Ved” to her longtime friends, passed away on December 19, 2017, surrounded by her family and friends, after a courageous, hard-fought battle with cancer. Diane was 67. Born on July 8, 1950 to John and Florence (Pastore) Vedovelli, Diane grew up in Torrington, and attended the Torrington Public Schools where she would later return as a teacher. After completing her Master’s Degree at SCSU, Diane began her teaching career in Torrington, where for 45 years, she touched the lives of countless young learners. Known for her “popped” collars and quick wit, she was well-loved by students and colleagues alike. Diane was truly in her element in the classroom. Although she wore many different hats as an educator, Diane loved teaching math and was the resident math specialist at East School leading up to her retirement. She was passionate about teaching, about her students, and her school family.

Diane also has a long history of service to her community, including two six year terms on the Litchfield Board of Education, serving as its Chair from 1997 to 2005. She also served for two years on the Litchfield Board of Finance, and at the time of her death she was serving her fourth term on the Litchfield Board of Selectmen. Diane was also a member of the local Cable TV Advisory Council.

More than anything else in the world, Diane loved her family. She was fiercely devoted to her sons and  grandchildren, and never tired of sharing proud moments. Nothing made her heart swell more than spending time with her boys. They truly did light up her world. She was a compassionate and caring mother, wife, grandmother, and friend who spent a lifetime helping children reach their potential. Among her favorite pastimes were trips to Key West and Narragansett where she enjoyed spending time with her lifelong friend, Terry Lynn. She was happiest on a beach with a good book, surrounded by family and friends.

Diane is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Thomas Knox; son, Adam Knox of Stamford, CT; son, Trevor Knox and wife Alyssa (Denza) of Clarksville, TN; grandchildren Mason and Mila Knox; mother Florence Vedovelli of Torrington, CT; sister, Judith Theeb and husband, Maurice Theeb of Torrington; niece, Wendy Petrovits of Torrington, CT, and special friends Terry Lynn Kelly of Marathon, FL; and Susan Fergusson of New Hartford, CT.

Diane’s family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Torrington’s Smilow Cancer Center, particularly Dr. Gomez and Michelle, for their unwavering kindness and support.

A Celebration of Diane’s Life will be held at a yet to be determined date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Diane Knox Memorial Fund, c/o Litchfield Bancorp, 294 West Street, Litchfield, CT 06759. Funds will be used to support the revitalization of Litchfield.
