Torrington- Raymond G. Dowd, 81, died Friday, January 26, 2018 at home surrounded by family. He was the husband of the late Eleanor (Steck) Dowd.
Ray was born in Torrington on September 30, 1936, son of the late Raymond H. and Anna (Obiedzinski) Dowd and a had been a lifelong Torrington resident. He graduated from Torrington High School, class of 1954 and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. Ray was stationed at the Manhattan Beach Air Force Station when he met and married Eleanor. They were blessed with 52 wonderful years together before he lost her to cancer in 2011.
He worked as a computer programmer and system analyst, starting employment at Kaman Corp., Patterson Oil, Talley Industries, Waring Products, and went into retirement from Bozzuto’s Inc. Ray enjoyed the time spent with the grandchildren he loved. He looked forward to golf season and the great friends he made throughout the years in the Brother-In-Law golf league. Ray was a member of the Torrington Elks Lodge and was also a member of the duckpin bowling league with team #4 for many years. Morning coffee with his friends at Dunkin Donuts was always a treat and Sundays weren’t complete without breakfast at Tony’s with the grandkids. He had fond memories of his earlier years coaching young boys in the Varsity Alumni Basketball Leagues.
Survivors include a son, David Dowd and his wife Lisa of Bristol; a sister, Betty Cantu; three brothers, John Dowd, James Dowd and his wife Betty, and Kenneth Dowd and his wife Diane; four grandchildren, Kimberly Aeschliman, Michael Aeschliman and his wife Bryttnee, Josh Dowd, and Julia Dowd; a great-grandson, Sonny Aeschliman; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Raymond was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen (Dowd) Aeschliman; a son-in-law, Glen Aeschliman; three sisters, Bernice Ugaglia, Marilyn Capra, Janice Kelsey; and a brother, Richard Dowd.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 9:00a.m. from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 78 Litchfield Rd., Harwinton, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.
