I apologize for the tardy condolences. I been tied up with life that I noticed that Mr. Betts passed away. I had him for sophomore history class. He was an excellent teacher. He helped me tremendously with my study and note taking skills. He took the time to help me and all of his students. He encouraged all his students to strive and he never gave up on a student. He really wanted everybody to succeed. I have used the study and note taking skills throughout nursing school and currently in Nurse Practitioner school. I really enjoyed his class he was one of the best teachers I ever had. I am sad to hear of his passings. I do think of his class often. RIP. Monica Bonvicini class of 1993.

So very sorry to see this obituary. It doesn't begin to capture the spirit of the teach i remember so well from my THS days. Mr. Betts was fond of predictions; happily for the world, he missed out on one: he told us to get a map, and start coloring in all the countries under communism, because it would continue to spread, Of course, this was pre-Gorbachev, pre-Glasnost. So thankfully, that prediction proved false! But I've never forgotten it. Sorry to hear of his loss.

Cathy,
Bruce started teaching at THS after I had graduated but I first heard about his great wit and teaching from my younger brother, Steve. And then I got to know Bruce, his wit and easy-going manner personally while I worked at Gazebo for a short while when he moonlit after school and weekends. He was part of what made working there enjoyable even on hectic days. In an earlier post, the Bovi's mentioned the employees and friends that would socialize after work, where I met you. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing much too soon at what we now think of as a young age. It's wonderful to see all of the other posts from his students that show his value as a teacher and positive influence on kids at such a formative time in their lives. I hope that eases your sadness even a little. My sympathy and best wishes to you and all of your family.

Mrs. Betts & family - my deepest sympathies to you all. Mr. Betts was one of the best - a great teacher whom I'll always remember smiling in the halls of B Third between classes. He really made me earn my grade in World Civ - all those notes! I remember fondly him poking fun at the class saying, "if any of you actually spelled out the whole word Mediterranean, you are lousy note takers!" This photo is such a perfect snapshot of him. You can see from all the candles lit here that he was truly loved and respected - such a legacy to leave. RIP Mr. Betts. Warmly, Kelli K.

Mrs. Betts,
My life was never the same after having Mr. Betts as my teacher my sophomore year at THS, in 1975. He spoke often, and glowingly, about his time in Oklahoma -- the nice people, the wide-open spaces, etc. -- and in 1975 he spent part of each Monday during the college football season reminding us of how his Sooners had beaten up on someone on the previous Saturday. I was taken by it all, and when it came time to apply to colleges, I chose OU. I returned to Torrington in the summer after my freshman year, but otherwise have been here ever since. My wife, my four children, my two grandchildren -- they're all Okies. All these years later, whenever anyone asks me how I wound up in Oklahoma from Connecticut, the story begins with Bruce Betts. I sometimes wonder how my life would have been different had I not had him as a teacher. God bless you and your family. Owen Canfield III

It has touched our hearts and makes it a little easier each day to know that Bruce is at peace and has left us a little better off to have been a part of his life. Again, thank you, Owen. Bruce Betts was by far one of the most well loved , respected teachers and man. His smile was infectious and remembered who I was even less than a year ago. He loved his students and treated us with respect and got down to our level of thinking like crazy teenagers. Mr. Betts, you were loved by all. The Lord wants you to be his angel. May your family stay strong. My deepest condolences.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Bruce. I didn’t have him as a teacher, I went to Reg 7, but he and I were on the same bowling team for a few years and we became friends. At the bowling alley people would tell me - Bruce was my favorite teacher in high school. I can understand why. Bruce was always happy, smiling and enjoying life. RIP Bruce. Until we meet again.

I graduated THS in 1985. Bruce was one of the best teachers I ever had. Entertaining, caring, practical, efficient. He effortlessly captivated the classroom. I chose to participate in an optional "how to study" session he offered after school. The techniques he shared have helped me with college, career, licensing, and music. I continue to use them today. So sorry for your loss.

Mr Betts had an impact of thousands of students that passed through Torrington High. While I did not have Mr Betts as a teacher, he made a point to stop and chat with me from time to time. Now that I’m an educator myself, I know building relationships is what is most important to kids. Mr Betts was a great role model. My condolences to your family.
