Barbara Niver Obituary

Hartford- Barbara B. Niver, 92, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2020 at her home.

          Barbara Niver was born in Torrington on February 6, 1928, daughter of the late Oscar and Nelly (Bolle) Strandberg, and had been a Hartford resident since 1962. She was a retired office manager with McCauley Enterprises, retiring with many years of service. Barbara was a member for many years of Center Congregational Church, Torrington. In retirement, she kept herself active through her many hobbies and special interests.  She loved gardening and was often complimented about her beautiful gardens.  She was an active with the Bristol Senior Center where she crafted ceramic and porcelain and was proud of her pieces displayed at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Ma.  She was a 7th Degree member of the National Grange for 62 years, active in Tunxis #13 in Bloomfield Ct and inactive in Granby #3 due health issues.  Barbara had a stroke 2010 and was confined to a wheelchair.  This changed her life but didn’t stop her good humor and witty comments and trying to continue enjoying her life as much as she was able.  Barbara’s happiest years were spent with Richard Itczak of Hartford Ct, with whom she shared he life for 43 years until his passing 2004.  She had a strong commitment to family.  For 34 years she organized and hosted a 3day family reunion at Camp Berger in Winchester Ct.  Every major holiday Barbara hosted a family gathering at her home.

          Survivors include a son, Anthony A. Niver of Hartford; a daughter, Sandra L. Niver of Waynesville, NC; five grandchildren: Tim Niver and Diane Fox of Torrington: Kevin and Melissa Niver of Torrington; Barbara-Jean Palmer of Springfield MA; Erick Stone of Waynesville NC; and Rebecca Pachecco of Waynesville NC.   Barbara Niver was predeceased by two sons, Wayne Niver and Robert Niver. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren and 2 great/great grandchildren.

          Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, services will be held privately. Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, is in care of arrangements.
