Obituary

Charles R. Hinchcliffe, 62, husband of Diana Backlund, died unexpectedly on Christmas Eve.

        Born in Torrington, he was the son of Elaine (Borzani) and the late John Hinchcliffe. He grew up in Cheshire, Conn., where he had many friends as a Boy Scout and as a member of the Cheshire High School Class of 1978. Charlie loved auto racing and was a fixture of racetracks throughout the northeast, serving as a corner worker starting in his teen years. He was a member of the SCCA’s New England Region and was well-known to NER, NNJR, NYR, and MoHud members. Charlie grew up a fan of Formula 1 racing and worked at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal and the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis for many years.

        He is survived by Diana, his mother Elaine, sister Claire, brother Raymond, and Raymond’s wife Karen and daughter Emma.

        Friends may call Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington.
