Torrington- David R. Iffland, 73, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018 in his home. He was the beloved husband of Diane (Mele) Iffland.
David was born in Torrington on March 24, 1945, son of the late Roger and Lucy (Bourquin) Iffland, and had been a lifelong city resident. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, and was a retired Senior Programmer with the Torrington Company, retiring with 31 years of service. David was an avid saxophone player and had been a member of the band “The Electras”. After his retirement from the Torrington Company, he owned On-The-Level Home Improvement Company. He was an avid duckpin bowler, playing on the Torrington Company leagues. David enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and playing tennis at Pinewoods Country Club. In his early years, he participated in the Soap Box Derby in Torrington, and played in softball leagues. David, always concerned about helping others, willingly participating in experimental research treatments for combating esophageal cancer.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Diane, include three sons, Frank Iffland of Chicago, IL, Matthew Iffland and his wife Kathryn of Tyrone, GA, and David Iffland and his wife Rose of Niles, IL; a step-son, Karl Thoma of Wendell, NC; a step-daughter, Christy Thoma and her husband Nathan Stadig of Frederick, MD; a brother, Peter Iffland and his wife Ginger of Chaplin; three sisters, Joan O’Reilly of Niantic, Nancy Murelli and her husband Arthur of Burlington, and Julie Iffland and her partner Chris Recchia of Randolph, VT; six grandchildren, Samantha Iffland, Zoey Iffland, Logan Iffland, Skylar Iffland, Jacob Iffland, and Amanda Iffland; and several cousins. David was predeceased by a brother-in-law, John O’Reilly.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington. Military Honors will be accorded at the conclusion of the services. Burial will be private. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 5:00p.m. until the time of service.
