Harwinton- Frederick P. Gottschall, 82, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington. He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Dwyer) Gottschall.
Mr. Gottschall was born in Torrington on May 3, 1937, son of the late David H. and Betty (Schindelbauer) Gottschall, and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. Mr. Gottschall was employed with the Torrington Company for over 40 years, where he began as an electrician and retired as the Plant Engineering Manager. He was a member of the Harwinton Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years and served as Fire Chief for 15 years. In addition, Mr. Gottschall had been a member of the Harwinton Zoning Board and the Harwinton Board of Public Safety. In 1996, Fred was awarded the Arthur B. Poole Award, now known as the Harwinton Outstanding Citizen Award, for all of his devoted volunteer work in the Town of Harwinton. Mr. Gottschall was an avid supporter of the Lewis S. Mills High School Band. In his spare time, he enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, as well as cutting and splitting wood for his wood stove. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Fred will be remembered for being a talented and experienced craftsman who was always willing to help others. Mr. Gottschall was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Torrington.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen Alibrandi and her husband James of Westford, MA, Linda Gottschall of Torrington, and Kristin Novak and her husband John of Colchester; a sister, Betty A. Grunder and her husband John; a brother-in-law, Wallace E. Gangell, all of Torrington; and five grandchildren, Angela Alibrandi, Brian Alibrandi, Michael Gottschall, John “Jack” Novak, V, and Katelyn Novak. Mr. Gottschall was predeceased by a brother, David H. Gottschall, and a sister, Elsie M. Gangell.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 11:00a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 837 Charles St., Torrington. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Wednesday, January 29, 2020 from 4:00 to 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington.
