Frederick Mercier Obituary

Torrington- Frederick Edward Mercier, 102, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington. He was the husband of the late Shirley Mercier.

        Mr. Mercier was born in Torrington on June 30, 1922, the son of the late John E. and Louise Marie (Lenz) Mercier and had been a lifelong city resident. He served his country proudly in WWII with the U.S. Army 28th Infantry, 8th Division in the European Theatre. Upon his return he worked for Daley Moving & Storage before his employment with Plume & Atwood Co. as a machinist. Mr. Mercier was an active lifetime member of the Torrington Fish & Game Club. He was a devoted fan of the UConn Women’s Basketball Team. He was the loving care provider for many pet cats and dogs over the years. He enjoyed fishing and often could be seen feeding birds at the downtown plaza parking lot while enjoying a morning coffee and donut or two.

        Survivors include two sons, Douglas E. Mercier and his wife, Ruth, and Gary E. Mercier and his wife, Vicki, all of Torrington, stepchildren; Michael Bullard of Torrington, Irene Beman of FL, Ronald Lovallo and his wife, Sandra, of Riverton, grandchildren; Doug Mercier, Jr., (Kristi), Scott Mercier, Jess Mercier all of NV, Emily Grasso (Christopher) of MA, Mark Mercier (Samantha) of Bristol, Christina Cooper (Adam) of VT, Jeremiah Cooper (Katherine) of Ireland, and Jonathan Cooper of VT, Jessica Allen, Gabby Bullard, Dylan and Ryder Copija, a sister Eleanor Klonoski of Torrington, nephew, Kenneth Klonoski (Sarah) of MA, and nieces Deborah Culver (Marc) of AK, Linda Gorman (Brian) and Cynthia Bielik (Larry) of Torrington. Mr. Mercier was predeceased by a brother, Richard Mercier, and a son, Richard John Mercier and former spouses Virginia Daley and Pearl V. Surdam. A special thank you to Miss Monica Murphy, who for many years was a kind and caring friend.

        Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 11:00a.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Torrington.  Relatives and friends may call on Monday, February 17, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home.
