Torrington- John “Jack” F. McGrane, 101, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Lunabrook Village Assisted Living, Torrington. He was the beloved husband of the late E. Maude “Dobbie” (Dobson) McGrane.
Mr. McGrane was born in Brooklyn, NY, on December 10, 1923, son of the late Theodore and Gertrude (O’Keefe) McGrane, and had been a Torrington resident for over 70 years. He was a proud graduate of Notre Dame University and he was a life long Notre Dame football fan. In 1942 while at Notre Dame he joined the Navy ROTC program. Upon graduation in 1945 he was commissioned an officer in the US Navy. After graduation he proudly served his country in the Navy for 6 years mostly on submarines. He worked as a manufacturing engineer at several companies, but his happiest years were in retirement. He had an active retirement where he continued his favorite hobby of running and competed in many local road races. His last road race was in 2015 at the age of 92. In retirement he also did a lot of volunteer work mostly at FISH in Torrington. Jack loved life, he loved his family, his catholic faith and he loved the USA.
Survivors include three sons, John H. McGrane and his wife, Denise, of Farmington, Glenn F. McGrane and his wife, Barbara, of Harwinton, and Mark D. McGrane and his wife, Alisa, of Austin, TX; a daughter, Elaine McGrane Olmstead of Boxborough, MA; three grandchildren, Sarah Obremski, Calley Bangs, and Bryan McGrane; five great-grandchildren, Ava Obremski, Hope Obremski, Makayla Obremski, Finley McGrane, and Rowan McGrane; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. McGrane was predeceased by a son-in-law, Charles Olmstead.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 10:00a.m. at the Shrine of Lourdes in Litchfield, 50 Montfort Rd., Litchfield. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington.
