Torrington- John A. “Sonny” Winzler, 87, passed away Friday, September 18, 2020 at his home surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Helen W. (Williams) Winzler for 67 years.
Mr. Winzler was born in Torrington on September 2, 1933, son of the late John W and Mary (Lauf) Winzler, and had been a lifelong city resident. He was a retired welder with Torrington Metal Products Co., retiring with 50 years of service. John was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Torrington, and the last surviving member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Committee. He had also served the church as an usher and was a past secretary of St. Paul’s Church Council. Mr. Winzler had served as a board member of Hillside Cemetery Association, Torrington. He loved working with his hands in all ways, especially creating beautiful artistic sculpture pieces.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Helen, include a son, Paul J. Winzler and his wife Catherine of Torrington; two granddaughters, Meredith J. Pleil and her husband Kenneth, and Hannah M. Winzler, all of Torrington; a brother, George Winzler and his wife Ethel of Harwinton; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Monday, September 21, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington. Funeral services and burial in Hillside Cemetery, Torrington, will be held privately.
