“Goodness is as goodness does” was the caption in her high school yearbook, and it couldn’t have been more apt.
New Hartford- Lorelei Steiner died at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Sunday, Sept. 17th, 2023. Born in New York City on June 1, 1942, to Swiss parents Irene Schenkel Steiner and Albert Steiner, she grew up in Goshen and Bakersville, and at an early age led a life of giving to and helping others.
After graduating from Region #7 High School, she attended Central CT State College, attaining a BS and then a MS degree in Education. She pursued her passion, teaching, for 29 years at Harwinton Consolidated School, worked part time as a tour guide for the Kelley Transit Company in Torrington, collected and shipped countless packages of clothing and needed items to Indigenous people in North Dakota, and worked tirelessly for the United Congregational Church, UCC of Torrington. During the summer months, she could often be found weaving magic in her vegetable garden, coaxing the tiniest seed to burst forth, producing bountiful yields.
Known for her strong, heart-felt hugs, Lorelei loved God, loved her church and loved people. She leaves behind friends and relatives, not to mourn, but to celebrate her life and pay it forward through good works and deeds.
