Sandra Elson Slemmer, 77, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington. She was the beloved wife of David C. Slemmer.
Sandra was born in Ashland, OH, on April 18, 1948, daughter of the late Richard G. Elson, and Jeanne R. Countryman, and had been a resident of Barkhamsted for over 20 years, previously living in New Fairfield, CT. She received her Masters of Science degree from Miami University, Ohio. After college graduation she had worked for several different companies throughout the years, beginning as a histobiologist at Merck and Company, and then moving on as a database administrator at Pepsi. She was a member of the Sharon Audubon and Litchfield Hills Audubon. At Sharon, she volunteered for 20 years caring for and rehabilitating injured birds, including raptors and also helped with all of their special events. She was on the stewardship board at Sharon Audubon, attended Pleasant Valley Methodist Church, was an avid sporting enthusiast encompassing all seasons. Sandra’s passion was nature and conservation of her natural world. She enjoyed birding, reading, jigsaw puzzles, and exploring new places while hiking with her dogs.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, David, include a brother, Paul Barnhill of NC, a niece, Emily Barnhill, and a nephew, Nathanial Barnhill.
There will be no formal services, burial was held in Greensprings Natural Cemetery, Newfield, NY. Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, CT, is in care of arrangements.
