Obituary

Oakville- Winifred “Winnie” Marion Gladding Battelli, 87, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Apple Rehabilitation, Avon. She was the beloved wife of the late Francis Anthony “Frank” Battelli.

Winnie was born in New Britain on May 2, 1933, daughter of the late Allie and Rhea (Dauphnais) Gladding. “Mimi” as she was affectionately known, was a kind and gentle soul who valued a simple life filled with books, her “animals”, and her family. A self-proclaimed “vegetarian” who loved hot dogs and bacon, she was adored by all who met her. Mimi loved sharing stories of her childhood; a tomboy on the rifle team to a member of the synchronized swim team. She enjoyed watching sports and cheering for the Red Sox, Redskins, and UCONN basketball. She loved gardening, her Mustangs, and video games. She and her late husband, Frank, owned an accounting business in Waterbury, CT of which she was an impeccable bookkeeper. Her greatest accomplishment, however, was adopting her four children through Catholic Family Services, who were her world.

Survivors include a daughter, Rhea Battelli O’Connor and her husband Terrance of Burlington; two sons, James Battelli of Katy, TX, and Walter Battelli and his partner Marian Mathison of Surprise, AZ; and four beloved grandchildren, Aidan O’Connor, Riley Grace O’Connor, Dominic Battelli, and Michael Mathison. She was predeceased by a daughter, Andrea Battelli, and a grandson, Christopher Battelli of Katy, TX.

A private memorial service and burial for immediate family will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, Torrington, is in care of arrangements.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Winnie’s memory to the Friends of the Burlington Public Library (http://www.friendsburlib.org/donations.htm) or Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue Inc.
