East Falmouth, MA- James M. Farrell, 76, died Sunday, August 27, 2017 in his home, after a 2 year battle from complications from the Powassan Virus, (a tickborne illness). He was the beloved husband of Beverly (Burek) Farrell.
Mr. Farrell was born in Springfield, MA, on April 12, 1941, son of the late Thomas and Rose (Dubois) Farrell, and had been a Torrington resident for 34 years, until moving to East Falmouth 11 years ago. He was a U.S. Coast Guard Vietnam Era veteran, and was a retired Ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. James was a member of the United Congregational Church, Torrington, where he was active in Church affairs. Mr. Farrell was also a member of the Cotuit Federated Church, Cotuit, MA. He treasured his family, enjoyed gardening, flowers, birds, and was an avid outdoorsman.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Beverly, include two sons, Michael Farrell and Daniel Kavula and his wife Melissa, all of Torrington; two daughters, Cynthia (Farrell) Fuller and Michelle Kavula, both of Torrington; a sister, Margaret Walsh of West Springfield, MA; four grandchildren, Heather Farrell-Dunn and her wife Christine, Kristi Kavula, Walter “TJ” Arndt, and Kassie Kavula; and two great-grandchildren, Matteo Kavula and Jerric Hitchcock. Mr. Farrell was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and John Farrell, and a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Boucher.
Services will be held Friday, September 8, 2017 at 10:00a.m. at the United Congregational Church, 1622 Torringford St., Torrington. Burial will follow in Torringford Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington.
